UMaine Institute of Medicine

This program requires a full-time UMaine or UMM faculty to work on a pilot project aimed at collecting preliminary data/proof of concept leading to submission of a related significant proposal by July of 2024. Proposals must be received by April 17, 2023. Up to three grants with a maximum budget of $20,000 will be awarded. Proposals will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Institute of Medicine Steering Committee and awards will be made subject to final approval from the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. Funds for the IoM seed grants will be available to successful grant recipients through June 2024.

Areas of research to be funded must deal with some aspect of mental health. Targeted Departments/Colleges include Psychology, Social Work and Nursing.

How to Apply

Interested UMaine and UMM faculty members should submit an application package using our InfoReady Review grant application submission portal.

1. Applications should include:

• A description of the proposed project in two to three double-spaced pages.
• Applicants should articulate specific NIH (or other) programs that will be pursued and when. If the applicants have selected an NIH Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) or other agency announcement, they should reference those announcements as part of their proposal.
• A one-page budget and justification. Allowable budget items include: summer salary/fringe, student employment support, and research supplies. If applicants received internal grant funding within the past 5 years, provide 2-3 paragraphs for each project describing the work and outcome(s), this will not count against the budget page limit.
• NIH biosketches for the faculty team members.

2. Eligibility is limited to full-time faculty. This includes tenured, tenure-eligible, and soft- money faculty for whom research is an expected component of their appointment.

3. The project for which funding has been requested must not depend on funding from subsequent IofM grant competitions.

4. In reviewing proposals, the Committee will use the following criteria: Relationship of the project to Institute of Medicine goals; Likelihood of securing funding; Breadth and depth of collaboration across units and colleges; Merit; and Significance of the proposed work.

5. A two-page report summarizing results and copies of publications resulting from the project are required at the termination of the project. Proposals from individuals with any delinquent reports will not be considered. Awardees are also expected to participate in an IoM seminar or similar event in which they share a summary of their project.
