52874: Clark, Mary Esther Treat Scholarship Fund

THE MARY ESTHER TREAT CLARK SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established at the University of Maine Foundation in 2007 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine with a gift from William W. Treat ’40 in memory of his sister, Mary Esther Treat Clark, Class of 1944.

The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide financial assistance to students who are graduates of Maine high schools and who are majoring in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The student(s) shall be in good academic standing with a preference to students with financial need.

Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose that best fits the donors’ intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion.

The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid, shall make selections of the recipient(s). The Office of Student Financial Aid shall administer the income from the fund.


52751: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Scholarship Fund

THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 2005 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, by friends and supporters of the college.

The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used for meritorious students with financial need enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students interested in arts or humanities areas will receive preference.

Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of the Fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donors’ intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion.

Selection of the recipients shall be made by the dean or a committee appointed by the dean in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid. The Office of Student Financial Aid shall administer the income from the fund.


52527 Hanger, Jane Gerry Chase Scholarship Fund

THE JANE GERRY CHASE HANGER SCHOLARSHIP FUND (F) was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 1998 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine with gifts from John, Richard, Robert, Nancy and Gregory Hanger, in honor of their mother, Jane Gerry Chase Hanger, a member of the Class of 1935. The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for female undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a preference for those students who participate in intercollegiate athletics, who have demonstrated good character and who have financial need. Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donors’ intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid and the Director of Athletics. The income from the fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid.


53207 Labby Family Award for Student Advancement Quasi-Endowment Fund

The Labby Family Award for Student Advancement Quasi-Endowment Fund was established at the University of Maine Foundation in 2013 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine with a gift from Scott and Rebecca Labby on the occasion of their wedding to pay tribute to the courage, work ethic and compelling spirit of Scott’s mother, Barbara Labby. Barbara did not have the opportunity to go to college, but she instilled in her son a love of learning and a desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives. A victim of domestic violence in her first marriage, Barbara’s strength and bravery allowed her to build a new life for herself with her devoted second husband(and Scott’s father), Roderick Labby, Sr., and her example inspired not only her son, but countless people in the community.

The principal shall be invested in the general endowment pool and both the principal and income may be used to make a $2,000 award each year to a single student in his or her junior year for educational costs that are tied to a class, independent study, internship or Departmental recommendation for purposes that advance the student’s educational experience and academic success. The award may be used for educational purposes including (but not limited to) scholarships, summer internships and experiences, attendance at conferences or any need that will promote the student’s advancement in their academic career. It is intended that the award will be presented annually at the Faculty & Student Awards Ceremony for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS).

Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose which best fits the donors’ intent and wishes shall be designated by the Board of Directors of the University of Maine Foundation in its sole discretion after consulting with the President of the University of Maine. A Nominating Committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences shall make selection of the recipient(s). The Office of Student Financial Aid shall administer the fund.

50384: Sciences (College of) Scholarship Fund

THE COLLEGE OF SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP FUND (E) was established at the University of Maine in 1992 to acknowledge the establishment of the College of Sciences in 1989. The income from the fund (to include appreciation) shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to academically meritorious students enrolled in the College of Sciences. Selection of the recipients shall be made under the direction of the Dean of the College of Sciences in consultation with the Office of Student Aid. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.


50392: Social and Behavioral Sciences (College of) Scholarship Fund

THE COLLEGE OF SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP FUND (E) was established at the University of Maine in 1992. Upon attaining the endowment level, the income from the fund (to include appreciation) shall be used for scholarship assistance to students enrolled in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences in consultation with the Office of Student Aid. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.


52235: Tarr, Omar F. and Lenora L. Memorial Scholarship Fund

THE OMAR F. AND LENORA L. TARR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND (F) was established in the University of Maine Foundation for the University of Maine in 1980. The scholarship was made possible with gifts from Lenora L. Tarr, their daughter, Natalie E. ’51, their son, Fred P. ’53, and matching gifts from the Martin Marietta Corporation and the Polaroid Corporation. The income from the fund shall be distributed to provide scholarship assistance for meritorious students as follows: one-third to Music, one-third to Nursing, one-sixth to Chemical Engineering and one-sixth to Science. These academic programs reflect Omar Tarr’s career as a chemical engineer, Lenora Tarr’s career as a nurse, and their shared love of music. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the Office of Student Aid in consultation with the Chairs of the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Music, the Director of the School of Nursing and the Dean of the College of Sciences. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid. (This fund was originally established in the University of Maine Foundation in 1966 by Fred Tarr as a scholarship to a student in the College of Engineering and Science with preference to those whose major program of study includes optics and material science in preparation for a career in instant photography. At the request of the donors, the fund was further modified in 1991 to include Science.)


52545: Whitehouse, Theodore and Dorothy Scholarship Fund

THE THEODORE AND DOROTHY WHITEHOUSE SCHOLARSHIP FUND (F) was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 1998 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine with a bequest from Theodore, Class of 1950 Engineering Physics, and Dorothy, Class of 1948, Sociology, Whitehouse, in memory of Maynard F. Jordan, Class of 1916, and former professor of Astronomy. The principal shall be endowed and only the income, as established by the University of Maine Foundation Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or its successor College based on academic merit and promise at the discretion of the Dean.

Preference should be given to students with an interest in astronomy, engineering physics, mathematics, and physics. First preference is to be given to student(s) who have graduated with a high school education in the State of Maine. A second preference shall be given to those students who have graduated with a high school education in New England. Selection of the recipient(s) shall be made by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or its successor College in consultation with the Office of Student Aid. The fund shall be administered by the Office of Student Aid.


55228: Writing Center Fund

The Writing Center Fund was established at the University of Maine, Orono, Maine in 2012 with gifts from alumni and friends.

The fund shall be used at the discretion of the Director of the Writing Center to support student participation in academic conferences including travel, overnight accommodations, meals, and any other expenses as deemed appropriate. The Director of the Writing Center will provide the Office of Student Financial Aid with the recipient names, student support provided, and student expenses covered by the fund.

Should it ever become impossible or impractical to carry out the purposes of this fund as described above, an alternative purpose that best fits the donor’s intent and wishes shall be designated by the President of the University of Maine.

The fund shall be administered by Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
