Travel Signatures

Planning a short trip abroad? Be sure to carry the appropriate documents and have an updated visa and travel signature to ensure a successful entry upon your return. If you have questions about your travel plans be sure to reach out to your International Student Advisor.

REquest a travel signature

Log into your e-OIP account to request a signature. We recommend that you update your travel signature every 8 months.

Advice on Non-US visas

Unfortunately OIP cannot advise on requirements for entry visas to other countries. Check the website for a specific country’s visa services for more information.

Essential Documents to Carry With You When Traveling Abroad

  • I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1)- most recently issued with valid travel signature
  • I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1)- most recently issued with valid travel signature
  • Valid Passport
  • Valid F-1 or J-1 Visa Stamp (Not required for citizens of Canada or Bermuda)
  • EAD (OPT Card) and Verification of Employment if on OPT

Other Recommended Documents

  • Recent Transcript
  • Copy of your scholarship or award letter

Automatic Revalidation

  • Students who travel to the following countries for less than 30 days may be able to return with an expired F-1 or J-1 visa, under the “Automatic Revalidation” provision.  Please consult with your International Student Advisor for clarification:
    • Canada
    • Mexico
    • Bahamas
    • Barbados
    • Bermuda
    • Dominican Republic
    • Haiti
    • Jamaica
    • Martinique
    • Miquelon
    • Saint-Pierre
    • Trinidad
    • Windward and Leeward Islands
    • Other British, French, and Netherlands territory or possessions in or bordering on the Caribbean Sea

      Automatic Revalidation is not available to:
      – Students who are citizens of Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria
      – Students who apply for a new F-1 or J-1 visa while abroad
