Phi Alpha Theta
The International Honor Society in History
Each Spring, the department inducts outstanding undergraduate and graduate students of History into Phi Alpha Theta. The UM chapter (Phi Gamma) was established in 1972. An initiation fee is levied prior to induction. New members are entered on the rolls of the chapter and the international society and receive a one-year subscription of the society’s quarterly journal, The Historian. The international society annually awards a number of competitive scholarships to members, holds annual competitions for scholarly books and papers written by members, convenes a New England regional conference each year, and meets jointly with the American Historical Association annually. Induction into Phi Alpha Theta is noted on the student’s transcripts and is an honor recognized throughout the profession.
Criteria for admission to Phi Alpha Theta are: Undergraduates: a minimum of four completed History courses, a grade average of at least 3.1 in all History courses completed, and a grade average of at least 3.0 in two-thirds of all other courses completed; Graduate students: completion of at least ten hours of History courses with a minimum grade average of 3.5.
