Description: This course is designed to introduce advanced history students to the research methods and modes of inquiry and writing employed by professional historians, and to give students an opportunity to write a significant research paper on a topic of their own choosing. The theme of the course will be foreign affairs and American society in the twentieth century. We will consider the interrelationships between the emergence of the United States as a world power, its increasing involvement in foreign wars, and changes in domestic society, politics and culture. Students will be allowed to choose either domestic or foreign policy themes for their papers, but as a central part of class discussions we will explore the linkages between the two. This is a writing intensive class that fulfills the capstone experience requirement.
General Education Requirements: Satisfies the Writing Intensive and Capstone Experience requirements.
Prerequisites: Restricted to history majors with senior standing.
