HTY 398: Historical Issues. Digital History: The Future of the Past?
Instructor: Samuel Backer
Days/Time: MWF 12-12:50pm
Location: S155
Course Number: 46173
Description: An exploration of a selected contemporary historical issue not covered in existing courses. “Digital History” will provide students with a hands-on introduction to the theory and practice of Digital History, a fast-growing field that brings big-data methods to the questions of traditional historical research. In this class, students will be introduced to the basics of coding with large language models, designing and then executing their own historical experiments. At the same time, they will reflect on what is made possible—and what can be lost—when we use scientific methods to examine the past.
