Description: This course provides a geographical perspective on the historical development of Maine over the last 500 years.  The course begins with European contact in the early 1500s, and then examines the evolution of Maine as a borderland during the colonial period, the American settlement of Maine in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the growth of industrial manufacturing and tourism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the de-industrialization and development of a service economy in Maine today.  The course pays particular attention to environmental, cultural, and cross-border issues.  (GEO 212 and HTY 212 are identical courses.
