HTY 199-0003: Problems in History: Intro to Public History
Instructor: Liam Riordan
Days/Times: TTh 11am-12:15pm
Location: S375
Course Number: 44596
Description: Public History is an exciting field that centers on the communication of historical information and interpretation to a general audience of non-experts. Examples of Public History work include interpretive signs along a trail, text or recordings about objects at an art museum or historic site, websites, and podcasts. This course provides a general introduction to Public History as an intellectual and hands-on practice. Since community collaboration is integral to meaningful Public History, the course includes guest speakers, partnerships with non-academic organizations, and field trips. All students will work on a public-facing research project that shares knowledge about the past in public space. History majors who want to take this course, but who have already taken the maximum number of entry-level survey courses for the major, can still enroll in this class for credit. Tues/Thurs 11:00 AM-12:15 PM in Stevens Hall 375. Please email Professor Liam Riordan (riordan@maine.edu) with any questions.
