Description: HTY 210 is a comprehensive history of Maine beginning with the arrival of the first human inhabitants some 12,000 years ago. It surveys the relation between Native cultures and their landscapes, the arrival of European explorers and migrants in the 1500s and 1600s, the struggle for statehood, and the emergence of the state’s staple products industries – fishing, farming, lumbering, ice-harvesting, and shipbuilding. It discusses the immigrant experience in Maine, the rise of tourism in the nineteenth century, and the transition from an industrial to a post-industrial economy.
