Workshops
The Hackerspace offers workshops by request to any students, staff, or faculty of the University. Here is a list of workshops currently on offer at the Hackerspace. If you would like to take part in a workshop, please email us at um.hackerspace@maine.edu in advance so we can set up a date and time! This list will change over time and we are always open to suggestions for new workshops!
Introduction to 3D Printing:
- Learn a little bit of the history of 3D printing
- Learn about current uses of the technology in the field and education
- Learn what resources are available on campus and off
- Build a simple 3D model using TinkerCad
- Learn how to prepare a model for print
- Operate the 3D printers and print a model
Level: Beginner
Introduction to Arduino:
- Learn a little bit of the history of Arduino
- Learn about current uses of the technology in the field and education
- Learn how to prototype a circuit using a breadboard
- Learn how to wire LEDs with resistors and power supply from the Arduino
- Learn to write some simple code to control lights
- Learn how to wire and write code to allow buttons to control the light
Level: Beginner
Raspberry Pi Setup & Security
- Learn a little bit of the history of Raspberry Pi
- Learn about the current uses of the technology in the field and education
- Learn how to create an image to install an OS
- Flash an SD card with the operating system
- Learn how to setup your new Pi with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse
- Learn a bit about securing your Pi for use online and remotely
- Learn how to remotely interface with the Raspberry Pi

Salvaged Speaker Design
- Learn how speaker drivers and amps work
- Learn how to wire speaker drivers
- Solder the wires and get sound to play from your mobile device
- Learn about the acoustics of speaker design
