Marine Sciences Instructor of Record at UMaine Machias 2024-2025 (Hybrid)

The University of Maine at Machias is seeking a current UMaine graduate student to serve as the Instructor Record for one marine science course per semester during the 2024-2025 academic year. This will be a full-time graduate student appointment for which the graduate student teaches one course with a lab per semester. In Fall 2024, the graduate student will be the primary instructor for SMS 206: Marine Biology and Ecology. The instructor will teach a lab for this course in person in Machias from 1-4:50 pm on Tuesdays. The instructor will also deliver two weekly lectures from 10-10:50 am on Mondays and Fridays, which may be taught in person or remotely via Zoom. The spring course is to be determined and can be scheduled to suit the graduate student instructor’s scheduling needs. 

Essential Duties:

  • Preparing and delivering lectures in support of the course learning objectives.
  • Work closely with Dr. Gayle Kraus, the instructor who normally teaches the course, to conduct the labs and field experiments for fall 2024
  • Creating, administering, and grading assessments for the course.
  • Holding office hours (1 hour per week) either in person or remotely.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of local coastal marine systems
  • Capacity to compose and deliver materials related to the fields of marine biology and ecology to second-year students in the major
  • Ability to drive a university vehicle (a large van) as per University regulations
  • Capacity to design and lead field and lab experiments related to the course content including statistical analyses

Compensation and Benefits

This is a 10-month (2-semester) position from August 1, 2024-May 31, 2025, requiring a commitment of 20 hours per week. The appointment carries a monthly stipend of $2,222.25/month for a doctoral student or $1,888.89 for a master’s degree student, plus a tuition waiver for up to 9 graduate credits per semester and coverage of 100% of the graduate student health insurance premium. Free on-campus (dormitory) housing at UMaine Machias will be provided if desired.

This is not a federal work-study position. International graduate students are eligible to apply. Applicants must be admitted to a UMaine master’s or doctoral degree program and enrolled full-time.
