Welcome from Vice President R. Lizzie Wahab
I came to Maine from upstate New York, via Connecticut, and I was greeted with a sense of belonging, kindness and community, like I have not felt so readily before. It was clear I had chosen a very special place to continue my work in Enrollment Management. My personal mission is to ignite student interests, help students and families afford college, and to aid them in the process of finding the right fit in a new place.
Here at The University of Maine, you will discover the Maine Way, both at our Flagship Research University at Orono or at our regional campus at Machias. There is a feeling of extraordinary vibrancy, dynamism, warmth and fun, and it is worth noting that much of what you will see as you walk around the campus is student-driven, or alum-inspired. Here at The University of Maine, we are simultaneously Big and Small. You will find the niche you can thrive at and before you know it, you will be immersed in your academic and co-curricular life, busily discovering all that you can be a part of.
We have high expectations for your enrichment through myriad of research and experiential learning opportunities that only a Flagship, Land and Sea Grant institution can provide. At the university, we will challenge you to look at the world through different lenses and respect your vision and perception of it. We will listen to your analysis, help push your boundaries to broaden your mind, and all along support you to develop citizenship, your sense of self, and thoughtful, civil discourse. I can tell you that the best time of my life, was as an undergraduate student like you, and I know being here, can be the best time of yours. You will never again have the same amount of time to do this with the same amount of concentration, with so much support—as many of my contemporaries know too well, sometimes life just gets in the way. Here however, it is all about your success, your collective experiences and your achievements. And when you graduate, we want you to be known for more than gaining nationally-recognized qualifications. We want to support the continuation of your achievements, and the benefit from being engaged by world-class scholars and practitioners at the university anytime you want to return.
On behalf of the Enrollment Management Team, I invite you to explore this exceptional place. Come experience the Maine Way personally, and should you choose to join us, Maine will always welcome you home!
With warm Regards,
R. Lizzie Wahab
