Owen McCarthy

Owen McCarthy’s journey from the small town of Patten, Maine (population < 1000 people) to becoming a successful entrepreneur and community leader exemplifies his commitment to hard work, leadership, and service. As a servant leader, Owen focuses on collaboration and problem-solving, driven by an optimism for a better future. His dedication to fostering meaningful change, elevating aspirations, and enabling individuals to excel has led to the creation of high-growth organizations that provide good jobs and opportunities.

As a first-generation college graduate, Owen laid the foundation for his career by earning a Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering from the University of Maine, graduating summa cum laude. He further honed his skills with an MBA from Harvard Business School, blending technical expertise with business acumen, which has been instrumental in his professional achievements.

Owen co-founded MedRhythms, a pioneering medical device company that has transformed healthcare and created high-tech jobs in Maine. Under his leadership, MedRhythms raised $60 million in venture capital to develop evidence-based, FDA-approved solutions using sensors, music, and software to improve walking for individuals with neurologic injuries or diseases. His strategic vision led to the successful launch of the InTandem product, now available through prescriptions for chronic stroke walking deficits and the Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Administration. Additionally, Owen’s team secured positive clinical trial data, obtained FDA product approval, and negotiated a global licensing deal with Biogen valued at over $120 million.

Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, Owen is deeply committed to community service and leadership. As a member of the University of Maine System Board of Trustees, he oversees strategic planning and financial management for a system that serves 7 public universities. He also serves as President of the Board of Directors for the Rural Future’s Fund, where he leads efforts to support the Aspirations Incubator Program, aiming to raise and sustain postsecondary aspirations in rural Maine communities. Owen’s also been Chair of the Digital Therapeutics Alliance, the trade association for his industry, advocating for innovative healthcare solutions and a change in the healthcare ecosystem.

Owen’s contributions have been widely recognized, earning him numerous awards, including being named a Presidential Leadership Scholar in 2024. Under his leadership, MedRhythms has received accolades such as the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, the Governor’s Award for Business Excellence, and the Best Places to Work in Maine Award. Personally, Owen has been honored with the MaineBiz NEXT Award, the UMaine Rising Star Award, and the UMaine Block M Award.

In his free time, Owen enjoys watching Maine high school basketball, reading leadership books, and spending summer days with his wife and two sons on Porter Lake in western Maine.
