- Athena Consort
A select choir of women’s voices, which sings a broad repertoire of choral literature spanning nine centuries. Emphasis is placed on music composed specifically for treble/women’s choir. (MUS 298, sec. 40)
- Black Bear Men’s Chorus
Comprised of students, faculty, staff and members from the surrounding community, the “BBMC” is dedicated to a wide variety of traditional accompanied and a cappella men’s choral repertoire. The group can be seen and heard in concert during each semester and throughout the year at various UMaine athletic events performing the National Anthem. MUS 298, sec 68

- Chamber Jazz
The University of Maine’s newest ensemble presents great jazz standards and new literature in an intimate setting. Concerts include student improvisations, accompanied by Karel Lidral on the piano. (MUO 155)
- Chamber Music
The chamber music program gives students a chance to perform with faculty each fall, and spring semester. (MUO 149)
- Collegiate Chorale
A mixed choral ensemble open to all students, Collegiate Chorale draws from a diverse repertoire to perform works from all style periods from the middle ages to the present. MUO 109

- Concert Band
The University of Maine Concert Band is a non-auditioned group that plays a variety of concert band literature. It presents concerts both on and off campus in formal and informal settings, including Commencement and a combined concert with the Symphonic Band. (MUO 112)
- Jazz Ensemble
The UMaine Jazz Ensemble is a 20 piece big band that is open to all students at the University. Admittance is by audition-only. Directed by Dr. Jack Burt, the Jazz Ensemble performs several times each semester, both on campus and throughout the State of Maine. Additionally, for the last 12 years the Jazz Ensemble has performed a live 2 hour radio broadcast from the studios of Maine Public Radio, which is also simulcast throughout the world on the World Wide Web. The UMaine Jazz Ensemble performs music from all periods of Jazz: from swing band music of the 30’s through the 50’s, like Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton; to Bebop, Fusion and Funk, to contemporary concert jazz compositions and arrangements. - Marching Band
With their motto “Pride, Spirit, and Drive,” the marching band carries its spirit to all home football games. Previous experience is not required due to the fact that there is a band camp several days before the semester begins. They make weekend trips to away games, parades, and band shows. (MUO 111)
- Opera Workshop
The UMaine Opera Workshop involves students in all aspects of musical theater production. Students rehearse and perform music from the standard opera, operetta and musical repertoire, as well as chamber operas and experimental works in a workshop setting. (MUO 132)
- Oratorio Society
The Oratorio Society is a mixed choral ensemble comprised of members from the community and university students. The ensemble performs large choral-orchestral masterworks in conjunction with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and University Singers. MUO 103

- Orchestra
The University Orchestra rehearses and performs music from prominent orchestral repertoire. The group regularly collaborates with the Oratorio Society and Opera Workshop. (MUO 121)

- Pep Band
Maine’s ice hockey band, “The Screaming Black Bears” and the basketball pep band both attend home games in their respective sports to cheer on the teams. This is an exciting chance to watch your teams in action as well as travel with them if they go to the playoffs. They play music similar to that of marching band. (MUO 113)
- Percussion Ensemble
In addition to European based compositions, the ensemble performs in a variety of world music genres such as salsa, African drumming and Brazilian samba. The ensemble performs around the State of Maine, has traveled to southern France and was the first U.S. percussion ensemble ever to perform in Cuba. (MUO 150)
- Symphonic Band
The UM Symphonic Band is dedicated to the playing of serious literature written for band and smaller wind and percussion groups. The organization meets twice a week and admission to the course requires an audition which is used for placement. The band does several run-out concerts and also tours each year. (MUO 114)
- University Singers
The University of Maine Singers is an advanced concert choir whose members come from all disciplines across campus. The ensemble tours in the northeastern U.S. each spring and travels to Europe every four years. The group regularly performs with the Oratorio Society and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. MUO 101

65-75 members; audition required. Auditions are held during the entire first week of class in 239 Class of 1944 Hall. Each audition takes approximately 10 minutes. Singers do not need to bring music to the audition.
