What problem/s are you working to solve?
We are focused on the question: what influences the pace and progress of ecological and economic rehabilitation on rivers in Maine? I am interested in perceptions of river health and potential that might affect pace and progress (in both directions). I am also interested in the economic value of rivers and in the potential for the benefits of fisheries restoration to extend to the inshore cod fishery.

What progress are you making toward solutions?
We spent part of this summer conducting focus groups of local residents on their perceptions and opinions about the Androscoggin and Kennebec Rivers. Knowing what attributes of river systems are important informs our next steps.

How could your findings contribute to a more sustainable future in Maine and beyond?
Dam removal and river restoration projects are gaining momentum across the country. Researchers are in need of good information from projects like ours.

Why did you decide to join SSI?
The opportunities for interdisciplinary research on a Maine-based topic.

What’s the best part about collaborating on SSI research projects?
I think working with colleagues at other institutions and in other disciplines creates space for collaborative leadership and change. Learning from each other informs our research. The interdisciplinary focus is key.

Where’s your favorite place in Maine?
The Deep Hole off Port Clyde where the porpoises “play.”

What’s your ultimate Maine experience?
Watching the demolition of the Fort Halifax Dam and seeing the fish start to come back. And paddling off the Maine coast.

Mud season survival strategy?
Gore-Tex, extra towels, and good movies.

What sustains you?
My work; my friends; the outdoors; my partner, John; my dogs Peanut and Jonas; trying to make a difference.
