Course Descriptions: Spring 2014 - HTY 351: The Napoleonic Empire

Time:  Tuesday and Thursday; 9:30 – 10:45 am

Description:  This course will cover the history of the Napoleonic era in France and Europe, 1799-1815. Along with the Revolutionary decade, 1789-1799, the Napoleonic period constituted the beginning of modern Europe. We will discuss the political, social, economic, military, legal, and cultural developments of that era and explore its legacy. The course will begin with an investigation the French Revolution (1789-1799). We will then discuss several topics: 1. Napoleon’s youth and his rise to power; 2. The Napoleonic rule in France; 3. The Napoleonic wars and the formation of the Napoleonic Empire; 4. Europe under the Napoleonic rule; 5. The collapse of the Napoleonic regime.
