Course Descriptions: Spring 2014 - HTY 104 (0002): United States History II

Instructor:  Adam Lee Cilli

Time:  Tuesday and Thursday;  11:00am – 12:15pm

Description:  This survey explores selected topics in American history from the end of the Civil War to the present.  We will pay special attention to evolving understandings of race, gender, and class as the United States underwent enormous technological, demographic, economic, political, social, and cultural changes during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  We will examine these themes through lectures, course readings, and small-group discussions.  Reading assignments will be divided between a general textbook and primary source documents (i.e., written works produced during the period under study).  Along with participating in bi-weekly discussion sessions, students will need to write two short papers and take two essay -based exams.
