Course Descriptions: Fall 2013 - HTY 491: Technology and Society until 1950

Instructor:  Howard Segal

Time:  Tuesday and Thurday, 11:00-12:15

Description:  The course has three main purposes:

  1. To trace major developments in the history of technology from earliest times through the mid-1900′s, the peark of the English and American Industral Revolutions;
  2. To evaluate the variety of conceptions of “technology”;
  3. To examine the relationship between technological change and social and cultural change in both the past and the present.

The course assumes no familiarity with the history of technology and welcomes the participation of students from non-technical and technical backgrounds alike. The course will examine the history of technology both “internally”–as tools and machines–and “externally”–as related to the societies that have produced them and upon which they in turn have had impact.
