Field Camp Scholarships:
The School offers several awards and scholarships to undergraduates. Applications are typically due in October and February.
This scholarship is to be awarded to students who are in good academic standing, have a clear motivation for a career in the geosciences, and can demonstrate financial need. Selection of the recipients shall be made by a School of Earth and Climate Sciences committee in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid. The size of the scholarship will vary depending on the number of awards and financial need. The Office of Student Financial Aid administers the fund, and will distribute a check directly to the field camp. The award will be contingent on acceptance at an approved field camp.
To apply, submit a letter of application that includes: (1) a brief description of the field camp you will be attending including the host university/college, the location of the camp, and the cost (including travel to and from); (2) a copy of your most recent financial aid statement showing the dollar amount of loans and scholarships; and (3) your most recent transcript. Address your application to Dr. Karl Kreutz, Director, School of Earth and Climate Sciences and deliver to the main office of the School of Earth and Climate Sciences.
The Golden Field Camp Scholarship
The Nick, Erin and Thomas Golden Field Camp Scholarship was established in 2013. The gift honors Nicholas S. Golden, who was working toward a BS in Earth and Climate Sciences at the time of his death in May 2013, Erin Golden, Nicholas’s sister, and Thomas Golden, Nicholas’s and Erin’s grandfather, UM Class of 1955 and UM Athletic Hall of Fame member. The fund shall be used to provide scholarships for School of Earth and Climate Sciences undergraduates to help defray the cost of attending a geosciences field camp, which is a School requirement.
The Kupfer Field Camp Scholarship
The Kupfer Field Camp Scholarship was established in 2000 at the University of Maine for the benefit of University of Maine students in the Department of Earth Sciences, with a gift from Romaine Littlefield Kupfer, a member of the Class of 1945, and her husband Donald K. Kupfer (Ph.D. Yale ’51). The fund shall be used to provide scholarships for School of Earth and Climate Sciences undergraduates to help defray the cost of attending a geosciences field camp, which is a School requirement.
The Professor Joseph M. Trefethen Memorial Scholarship
The Professor Joseph M. Trefethen Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 at the University of Maine for the benefit of University of Maine students in the School of Earth and Climate Sciences, with a gift from Romaine Littlefield Kupfer, a member of the Class of 1945, and her husband Donald K. Kupfer (Ph.D. Yale ’51). This gift was given in memory of Professor Joseph M. Trefethen, the first faculty member in the School of Earth and Climate Sciences (then the Department of Geology) at the University of Maine.
This scholarship will be given in preference to students with field-oriented goals (in contrast to laboratory-oriented studies). Although good academic performance will be a criterion, greater emphasis will be placed on financial need. Exceptions to these guidelines can be made, on occasion, to assist the field studies of a graduate student working on a promising, Maine oriented, engineering geology or structural geology field study. Selection of the recipients shall be made by a School of Earth and Climate Sciences committee in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid. The size of the scholarship will vary depending on the number of awards and financial need. The Office of Student Financial Aid administers the fund.
To apply, submit a letter of application that includes a copy of your most recent financial aid application and your most recent transcript. Address your application to Dr. Karl Kreutz, Director, School of Earth and Climate Sciences and deliver to the main office of the School of Earth and Climate Sciences.
