Fairman publishes paper on school consolidation

CRE Launches Multi-State Expansion of Comprehensive Intervention Model Data System

January 28, 2013:  Today CRE launched a multi-state pilot study of the Comprehensive Intervention Model (CIM). The purpose of the study is to document how CIM helps educators meet the needs of children who are struggling to learn to read. The CIM system is uniquely designed to provide educators with real-time data about the progress of their students, and inform instructional decision-making within an RTI framework. The study expands the on-going CIMME project in Maine to include eight other states: Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Washington, and Wisconsin.

This study is a collaborative effort between the University of Maine and four other University Training Centers, including the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, National-Louis University, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Northern Iowa.

Fairman Publishes Paper on Teacher Leadership

April 30, 2012: Janet Fairman and Sally Mackenzie (UMaine Education Leadership faculty), have published a paper on teacher leadership in a special issue of the journal Professional Development in Education.

Doore Invited to Present on CIMME

Brian Doore has been invited to present on CRE’s CIMME system at the Regional Institute for Reading Recovery Teachers meeting in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

April 13, 2012: Janet Fairman is part of a roundtable on the challenges, supports and strategies for school consolidation, at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting in Vancouver, BC.

Doore and Fairman Present T4 Results

April 3rd, 2012: Brian Doore and Janet Fairman presented results from the Teaching through Technology Task Force (T4) to University of Maine System faculty and administrators.

Mason on WABI Discussing Mega-Millions Lotto

March 30th, 2012: Craig Mason was inteviewed by WABI regarding the $640 million lotto jackpot, noting that on average, you’re 2000 times more likley to date a super-model than win the Mega-Millions lotto. (Link to Video)

New Grant Targets Teaching and Learning Math

CRE, Worcester Polytechnic Insitute (WPI) and SRI International have received a $3.5 million dollar grant from the Department of Education to conduct a randomized, controlled efficacy study of the ASSISTments system (click here for more information).   ASSISTments is a free, online mathematics tutoring system developed by Neil Heffernan and colleagues at WPI that provides real-time scaffolded problem-solving support for students, as well as on-demand cognitive diagnostic reports to teachers.

Stacy Doore joins CRE team

With the new year, CRE also has a new member.  Stacy Doore has joined the CRE team as a Research Associate, effective January 1st, 2012.  Stacy is an experienced researcher with a background in education, and is currently working on her PhD in spatial engineering.  Her addition provides further breadth and depth to the skills available in the Center, particularly in regards to spatial analysis of educational data.

Mason Providing Informatics Training

Craig Mason will be providing a two-day training on electronic data linkage at the 17th Annual Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Conference in New Orleans on December 12th and 13th.
