Asian American Politics: A Case Study of Hmong American Political Incorporation in St. Paul, MN

Thilee Yost, political science and philosophy, is researching Asian American voting motivations and patterns for her Honors Thesis. Yost’s research is focused in St. Paul, MN, where examples of Asian American political incorporation and participation has been successful. Yost is using St. Paul as a potential model for other communities with dense populations of Asian Americans.

“By looking at the political behavior of Asian Americans, we can better understand their motives for voting, not voting, running for public office or not, and how parties can gain their vote in the future,” says Yost. “Gaining a voter block such as this can shift power in government which can be incredibly important and have large amounts of impact as we’ve seen in American history.”

Yost believes that the Center for Undergraduate Research (CUGR) and the UMaine Student Symposium provide great opportunities for students.

“CUGR has been generous to support my research. I would not be able to do this project without it!”
