An Exploratory Study Of Sustainability Conceptualizations And Practices In Maine Wineries

Michaela Murray studies environmental science. Her research is focused on understanding sustainability perceptions and implementations among Maine winery owners.

“I chose to study Maine wine not only because I have a personal interest in the product, but because it has become evident that the global wine industry is transitioning to more sustainable business models,” explains Murray. “I believe that Maine’s wine industry could grow and become an important economic market throughout the state if they also partake in the movement towards sustainable wine making. The continued development of the wine industry could create benefits for Maine’s economy through the support of small businesses and increased tourism.

Murray states that UMaine has given her the change to pursue and partake in research that is not only important, but also aligns with her personal interests, and that her experience here has greatly added to the her intellectual development.
