Developing a Novel Approach to Estimate Reproductive Success of Black Bears in Maine

Griffin Archambault, wildlife ecology, is currently researching and developing cost-effective monitoring protocols to establish an understanding of the black bear reproductive rates across the state of Maine.

“Black bears are a keystone species in Maine, and understanding how our uses of the land (such as forestry) impact their reproductive success will allow us to maintain a greater level of ecological integrity in the state of Maine,” says Archambault. “By developing a protocol that is both cost-effective and non-invasive that can estimate reproductive success of black bears across the state of Maine, we could change the way that all wildlife is managed.”

Archambault also says that during his time here at UMaine, he has been exposed to more opportunities than he could have imagined, including multiple jobs, scholarships, and a research grant.
