We are delighted to inform you that the Summer Institute is now scheduled to take place in Quebec City  this summer from June 23rd to the 28th, 2024.  Please mark your calendar!  L’Institut d’été se déroulera entièrement en français.

The Summer Institute will take place entirely in French.  Participants provide their own transportation to/from Quebec City. They should plan to arrive no later than 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23.  The program will conclude by noon on Friday, June 28. Participants must have a valid passport.

Institute Costs & Registration:

The $850 (USD) registration fee is due by May 6th, 2024. This fee includes single-occupancy lodging at Le Concorde in Quebec city, some meals, transportation during the program, and curriculum materials.

2024 Summer Institute Description

Quebec Dimensions: Historical, Cultural and Geographic Explorations  offers French language professional development in an immersion setting for six days in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, one of the largest French speaking cities in the world.

Program content is designed to support teachers of French seeking to incorporate Quebec/Canadian culture and North American French content into their classrooms.  Select curriculum materials and teaching resources will be provided. 

We are looking for highly motivated teachers who wish to practice their French while working on finding dynamic ways to include Canadian/Quebec content in the K-12 classroom. The Summer Institute will consist of visits to different locations in Quebec City and the surrounding areas, presentations from Université Laval faculty members, and workshops on teaching in French in the US. Program content is designed to support K-12 professionals, with content designed to meet Common Core, C3, and state standards. Select curriculum materials and teaching resources will be provided. The Northeast National Resource Center on Canada has been offering professional development opportunities in Canadian Studies and Quebec studies since 1979 to thousands of American teachers. 

Sessions will address select Quebec topics relating to language, culture (literature, film, music, art), history, geography, and politics.  The Summer Institute will offer a robust learning opportunity through first-hand experiences including -expanding vocabulary and strengthening communication skills briefings by academic and cultural experts educational tours of the city, site visits to cultural institutions, and curriculum planning and discussion.

Open Invitation for U.S. Teachers of French (pre-K to grade 12 plus community college and university levels).  Educators of disciplines other than French may also apply pending their French language ability and verification of teaching responsibilities related to Québec/Canadian content.  French language ability required for participation is intermediate level in accordance with ACTFL guidelines.

 

French Immersion: Institut d’été will be conducted en français.  

 

Program Director:  Dr. Frédéric Rondeau, Director of the Canadian-American Center, and Associate Professor of French, University of Maine, is a Montréal native who received his Ph.D. from McGill University.  

 

Transportation:  Participants are responsible to provide their own transportation to and from Quebec City, with arrival to be scheduled no later than 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 23, 2024.  The program will officially conclude at noon Friday, June 28th, 2024.  (Transportation is provided for program activities scheduled throughout the Summer Institute)

Organizers: Institut d’été pour les enseignant(e)s de francais is organized by the Northeast National Resource Center on Canada – a consortium including the Canadian-American Center, University of Maine and the Center for the Study of Canada / Institute on Québec Studies, State University of New York (SUNY) College at Plattsburgh.  The Northeast National Resource Center on Canada has offered professional development to American teachers in Canadian and Québec Studies since the 1980s, and has provided training to thousands of educators who teach about Québec and Canada.  The Summer Institute is produced with support from the United States Department of Education, International and Foreign Language Education, Title VI program.
