Ongoing:

  • Earth Week photo contest! Tag GCI in your selfies at Earth Week events. For each tag, you’ll be entered in a raffle for a corn hole set!
  • Reusable Mug Promo — Buy a UMaine Dining travel mug at the Bear’s Den and get a free cup of coffee! Then use a Green Coffee Bean Card to get every 6th mug of coffee for free!

Monday, Apr. 22nd – Happy Earth Day!

  • 11 AM – 2 PM: Earth Day Spring Festival — Join the Office of Sustainability and AmeriCorps to celebrate earth day on the Mall! Meet green clubs on campus and plant your own seedlings. Mall outside Fogler Library.
  • 11 AM -12 PM: Earth Week Presentation Series — Dr. Sharon Klein of the School of Economics presents Community Sustainable Energy at the Mitchell Center, room 105. Food will be provided by the Sustainability and Environmental Action Division (SEAD).
  • 11 AM – 1 PM: Stop by the Green Campus Initiative’s Making Smart Donations table in Memorial Union to learn about making safe donations to local and larger environmental non-profits and charities, and how to make the most out of your support. While you’re there make sure to get one of GCI’s new stickers!
  • Lunch: Sample Farm to Table items at The Bear’s Den.
  • 2 PM – 3 PM: Dynamic Earth showing at the M.F. Jordan Planetarium. Explore the inner workings of Earth’s climate system with visualizations based on satellite monitoring data and advanced supercomputer simulations. $6 for adults, $5 for UMaine students/senior citizens and $4 for children 12 and under.
  • 3 PM – 4 PM: Sustainability of Collaboration  — George J. Mitchell Center Talk by Amber Roth, Assistant Professor of Forest Wildlife Management, School of Forest Resources, UMaine. 107 Norman Smith Hall.
  • 4:30 – 8 PM: Farm to Table Dinner — Dig into delicious local foods and learn about UMaine Dining’s commitment to purchasing local food. Dinner will be available at the Residential Dining facilities (Hilltop, York, and Wells Central).

Tuesday, Apr. 23rd:

  • 11 AM – 1 PM: Stop by the Office of Sustainability’s Recycling Trivia table in Memorial Union to test your knowledge about recycling at UMaine.
  • 11 AM – 12 PM: Green Resume Workshop — Come get help on your resume from a career expert & learn more about green careers. The Career Center in Memorial Union
  • 1 PM: Drop by the Rainbow Resource Center in the Memorial Union to create your own reusable bags from t-shirts!

Wednesday, Apr. 24th:

  • All Day: Celebrate Earth Day with The University Bookstore! As a co-sponsor of Earth Week, The University Bookstore is giving away a free reusable, environmentally friendly bag with any in-store purchase (while supplies last).
  • 11 AM – 12 PM: Earth Week Presentation Series — Dr. Ivan Fernandez of the School of Forest Resources & Climate Change Institute presents Climate Change FAQ File, a short tour of what we know about climate change in Maine, its effects, and what we do about it. Mitchell Center, room 105. Food will be provided by the Sustainability and Environmental Action Division (SEAD).
  • 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: Earth Week Presentation Series — Dr. Justin Lapp of the College of Engineering presents Solar Thermal Energy to De-Carbon Industry, about how heat from the sun can replace fossil fuels in some of the most energy intensive industries. Whether melting metals, storing energy for night time, or producing fuel directly from air, see the most recent research on solar thermal energy. Mitchell Center, room 105. Food will be provided by the Sustainability and Environmental Action Division (SEAD).
  • 2 PM – 4 PM: Powering Up Habib Dagher, Executive Director of the Advanced Structures & Composites Center, will share the pioneering research on offshore wind power being conducted through Maine Aqua Ventus. 101 Neville Hall.
  • 3 PM – 4 PM: Ice Core Lab Tour — Come learn about the carbon cycle through a tour of the Climate Change Institute led by Dr. Karl Kreutz. Tour includes viewing actual ice cores used for climate and carbon cycle studies. To reserve your spot, sign-up here by Friday, April 19. Meet at 3 PM in the lobby of Sawyer Hall.

Thursday, Apr. 25th:

  • 11 AM – 12 PM: Earth Week Presentation Series — Dr. Stephen Coghlan of the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Conservation Biology presents Economics as if Your Future Matters: Helping Earthlings Understand Limits to Growth on a Finite Plane at the Mitchell Center, room 105. Food will be provided by the Sustainability and Environmental Action Division (SEAD).
  • 11 AM – 1 PM: Stop by the Office of Sustainability’s Protect our Oceans Table in Memorial Union.
  • 11 AM – 1 PM: Stop by the Green Campus Initiative’s Supporting Native Bees table in Memorial Union to learn all about Maine bee species, habitat, and food. Free seeds, potting soil, and containers will be distributed so you can start your own bee friendly garden!
  • 12:30 PM -1:30 PM: Earth Week Presentation Series — Dr. Ellen Mallory of the Cooperative Extension and the Food & Agriculture presents Finding the Win-Wins’ for Farmers to Address Climate Change. Farmers are facing a variety of production challenges associated with climate change, and also are being asked to help reduce it. How can farmers both adapt to and mitigate climate change, and what are some of the strategies that have co-benefits on the farm? Mitchell Center, room 105. Food will be provided by the Sustainability and Environmental Action Division (SEAD).
  • 1:30 – 4 PM: Green Careers Fair — Meet with employers highlighting green jobs: from the Nature Conservancy to WWOOF, explore career paths that help our world! Lown Room, 2nd floor in Memorial Union.
  • 2 PM – 4 PM: Stop by the Municipal Solar Project table hosted by ECO 381 students working with the Town of Orono to propose a municipal solar project. Outside between Memorial Union and Fogler Library.
  • 4 PM – 7 PM: Careers in Outdoor Recreation and Tourism — Explore this rapidly growing industry by networking with professionals from Maine recreation and tourism companies. Outside the Maine Bound Adventure Center.
  • 7 – 9 PM: Sustainability Trivia Night — Join the Green Campus Initiative and the Campus Activity Board for a fun competition to test your sustainability knowledge. Prizes will be awarded! North Pod in Memorial Union.

Friday, Apr. 26th:

  • 11 AM – 12 PM: Earth Week Presentation Series — Dr. Sharon Tisher of the the School of Economics and Honors College presents Then and Now: Whatever Happened to Bipartisan Environmentalism? at the Mitchell Center, room 105. Food will be provided by the Sustainability and Environmental Action Division (SEAD).
  • 11 AM – 1 PM: Stop by the Green Campus Initiative’s Straws for a Cause table in Memorial Union to learn about the consequences plastic waste, such as single-use plastic straws, has on marine life and endangered species. A free metal straw will be given away to those who interact with the table.
  • 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: Earth Week Presentation Series —  Dr. Lakesh Sharma of Cooperative Extension & Sustainable Agriculture presents Role of Precision Agriculture in Improving Crop Yield at the Mitchell Center, room 105. Food will be provided by the Sustainability and Environmental Action Division (SEAD).
  • 7 PM – 8 PM: Habitat Earth showing at the M.F. Jordan Planetarium — Discover what it means to live in today’s connected world, and see how all species on our planet are interconnected and important to sustaining our living world. $6 for adults, $5 for UMaine students/senior citizens and $4 for children 12 and under.

Saturday, Apr. 27th:

  • 9 AM: Healthy High 5k & 10k — Race your fellow Black Bears at the the 12th annual fun run put on by the University Health and Wellness Center.
