Student Policies and resources
- Once you are enrolled in a summer class, go to your MaineStreet Student Services Center.
- Look in the menu on the left side under Enrollment for “My Class Schedule” and double-click on it. This will open to “Class Schedule Filter Options.”
- Be sure that “Show enrolled classes” is checked.
- Look in the far right column in the chart, labeled “Deadlines.”
- For each summer course you are taking, you will see a tiny calendar icon. Double click on that for the particulars on deadlines for dropping and withdrawing from that course, with the effect on your academic transcript for meeting and missing the deadlines.
You should make a note of these in your personal calendar, because you are responsible for knowing the deadlines and the consequences of missing deadlines. If an emergency prevents you from meeting a deadline, please contact the Division of Lifelong Learning to ask for an exception at 207.581.3143. Deadlines for refunds associated with dropping or withdrawing from summer classes can be found on the UMaine Bursar’s website.
Once a student is registered for a course, changes may be made within a specified time. For example, changes in registration may be made prior to the third class of a three- or eight-week session and prior to the fourth day of five- and six-week session. This applies to a change from audit or pass/fail to a credit basis, or vice versa. Changes can be made by Summer University office in Estabrooke Hall or by calling 207.581.3143. Advising is available from the DLL Advising Center.
Students may take a maximum of 18 credits during Summer University. Undergraduates who show an unusually good scholastic record on the basis of previous work, may secure permission to elect hours above the ordinary maximum registration. Students wishing to register for more than 18 hours must obtain permission from their advisor or from the Associate Dean of their college.
- Note: Summer University courses are offered in unique time blocks (3-weeks, 6-weeks, etc.). Although the time frame is condensed, these courses require the same amount of work as a full-semester course, and are thus intensive in nature. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that students take no more than one three-credit course in a three-week session, and no more than two three-credit courses in a six-week session. If you have questions or concerns about workload, please speak with someone in our DLL Advising Center.
Be sure to consider both the academic and the financial consequences of dropping your Summer University course.
- It is important to familiarize yourself with the MaineStreet calendar icons that will provide you with specific deadline dates.

- When you click the calendar icon, you will be given specific academic and financial deadline dates that will determine your outcome.

There is no graduated refund available for Summer University courses. If dropped by the financial deadline date, 100% tuition will be refunded.

Financial deadlines for Summer University courses will follow these guidelines:
- The number of weeks the course is in session determines the number of days you will have to drop your course without penalty. For example: A six-week course will have 6 days in which to drop and receive a refund; a three-week course will have 3 days, and so on.
- If you are unable to drop your Summer University course by the stated academic or financial deadline, please refer to University of Maine policy regarding appeals of drop penalties: “Students who cease attendance, in any or all of their classes, without providing official notification are not entitled to a refund. If a student ceases attendance for emergency reasons, the University will accept a written appeal. Normally, appeals will be considered up to 90 days after the close of the term for which the student is requesting a financial adjustment.”
- In order to appeal your penalty, please send a detailed email and any supporting documents to dlladvising@maine.edu. Your account will be researched, and a recommendation will be presented to the Bursar’s Office for a final decision.
For more detailed information about dropping any courses, please visit the Bursar’s Office webpage.
Students may access grades for their summer course(s) via their Maine Street Student Center. Grades are typically submitted by faculty 7-10 days after the end of a course.
Requests for academic transcripts should be directed to the Office of Student Records, 5781 Wingate Hall, Room 100, Orono, ME 04469-5781, 207.581.1288.
The University of Maine and the University of Maine at Machias acknowledge and adhere to the federal definition of a credit hour with respect to courses offered face to face, in hybrid format, and online, as developed in 2010 and published in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 34, Part 600.02:
[A] credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than
(1) One hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out of class student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester or trimester hour of credit [ . . . ] or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time; or
(2) At least an equivalent amount of work as required in paragraph (1) of this definition for other academic activities as established by the institution[,] including laboratory work, internships, practica, studio work, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours.
