Helpful Education Abroad Data

Integrating Global Learning Initiatives into your Curriculum

These sheets are useful tools that help advisors, departments, and students look through pre-evaluated courses offered on programs abroad. We hope this will allow those who use them to feel more empowered and comfortable with deciding on course and programs that will be best for them or their students. We are continually working on integrating coursework from programs abroad with various majors at UMaine to make the process easier for everyone.

Let us know if you have questions about curriculum integration for your department/major/college!

Bailey West

“Studying abroad seemed like the ideal, but I initially doubted whether I was even cut out for it. One of the first pieces of advice I received as a first-year was, ‘Don’t let your classes get in the way of your education.’ Shortly thereafter, I met with my academic advisor to discuss possibilities and he echoed that studying abroad is a life-changing experience that students never regret.”

How to Encourage Your Student to Study Abroad

  • Encourage students to start their education abroad research from the very first semester at UMaine.
  • Use your platform and expertise in your field to explain why having intercultural skills and experiences is valuable in your field/industry.
  • Many students need guidance in working out how courses taken abroad may function in their degree progress. Our team will evaluate courses from abroad, but we defer to the academic expertise of the faculty.
  • Courses abroad may not be direct equivalents to courses at UMaine, but if they have similar content, they may be considered to substitute for what a student would normally take at UMaine.
  • Academic advisors and department chairs/coordinators assist the student in selecting courses abroad while the Education Abroad Advisor assists in transfer credit evaluation.
  • Once the student starts the education abroad pre-departure process, the student will complete an International Study Away Registration form. The student needs to include a wish list of courses abroad for pre-approval, and obtain the signatures of the (1) Education Abroad Advisor, (2) Academic Advisor, and (3) College Dean. The Education Abroad Advisor provides information on credit hour equivalence and course level.
  • All information related to pre- and post-program advising, visas, pre-departure preparation, in-country logistics, and transfer credit evaluation are provided by the Education Abroad Team.
