The University of Maine School of Performing arts presents a unique and special performance with two exquisite bands on Sunday, October 26th, 2014 at 2:00PM at the Collins Center for the Arts. The University of Maine Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble are going to be playing a selection of pieces all by American composers who wrote for multiple genres, styles and instrumentations. From Wind bands to Jazz bands to Orchestras, these talented composers wrote something for everybody!

The Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Jack Burt has an outstanding program planned. Pieces will include a Count Basie classic, Basie – Straight Ahead by Sammy Nestico. It’s a hard swinging chart that that is going to give the audience everything that is great about the Basie Band.

A highlight of the Jazz Ensemble’s program will be an arrangement of tunes from Gershwin’s opera, Porgy and Bess, but with none of the famous tunes! You read that right, No Summertime, no Bess or You Is MY Woman Now…nevertheless the audience is in for a beautiful piece of music that, although not well known, is definitely recognizable as Gershwin.

Also, the band will play two of the most popular charts from the Kenton Band, and will have you stomping your feet with Stan Kenton’s thunderous Afro-Cuban hit, Malagueña.

The Symphonic Band, directed by Christopher G. White is going to keep you just as busy with a bit of Ira Hearshen. Ira Hearshen is a noted Hollywood film composer writing for movies such as Rush Hour, Romeo Must Die, Toy Story 2 and others. The Symphonic Band program also features several pieces by Gershwin, including his 1932 composition, Cuban Overture.
