The University of Maine School of Computing and Information Science seeks applicants for a senior faculty position as the Director of the School of Computing and Information Science, to start as early as August 1, 2017, but no later than August 1, 2018.  Having met the School’s evaluation criteria for Professor and the granting of tenure, the successful applicant will be hired as tenured faculty in the School of Computing and Information Science and be appointed to a five-year term as director (with a two-year probationary period).  Reappointment as Director is contingent on satisfactory performance and mutual agreement.The Director is the School’s chief administrative officer, reporting to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  The Director’s position offers a competitive salary, additional compensation (a stipend and a month’s summer salary) for Director responsibilities, and a reduced teaching load.

The Director is the School’s chief administrative officer.  The Director is responsible for the general conduct of the School’s affairs.  The Director leads the School on a daily basis with duties including, but not limited to, working collaboratively with faculty to set and implement the School’s priorities, advancing the School’s status in research and education, allocating financial resources, recruiting students, evaluating faculty and staff, guiding program assessment, and scheduling courses.  Outstanding academic credentials, integrity, and a vision for sustaining the School’s diverse disciplinary culture will be critical.  .

Required:

  • An earned doctorate in Computer Science or a closely related field.

Preferred:

  • A background in Computer Science and Spatial Informatics.
  • Extensive experience as a faculty member in a multi-disciplinary unit.
  • A solid research foundation commensurate with the School’s research mission.
  • Current or very recent external research grant activity.
  • Familiarity with the field of New Media and with STEM education.
  • A documented commitment to excellent teaching.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Evidence of effective administrative performance including progressively responsible leadership positions.

The School of Computing and Information Science (https://umaine.edu/scis/) is an interdisciplinary unit encompassing Computer Science and Spatial Informatics.  It offers degrees in Computer Science (ABET-accredited BS, BA, MS, Ph.D), in Spatial Information Science and Engineering (MS, Ph.D), in Information Systems (MS), in Spatial Informatics (MS), and, entering, in New Media (BA).  The School currently has 13 full-time faculty members and enrolls approximately 200 undergraduate and 50 graduate students.
