Abstract:
Schools and educators have indicated increased concern about the challenges they face in supporting students’ social and emotional needs. In 2019, there were significant actions taken through legislation and by the Maine Department of Education (MDOE) to address this issue. Work is continuing and on-going in the state on this front. In spring 2019, the legislature asked the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI) to explore this topic in more depth during the 2019-20 school year and to report on findings. The purpose of this study was to better understand K-12 students’ social and emotional needs and areas of greatest challenge currently for schools and educators, as well as the strategies used by the MDOE and schools to support students and educators in this area, and areas where schools feel they need more support.
This study was funded by the Maine State Legislature, and the University of Maine System.
