RiSE Conference 2015: Teaching, Learning, and Assessment in the Context of the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics

Don’t miss the sixth biennial two-day conference for middle-level and high school science and mathematics teachers co-hosted by the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education (RiSE Center) and the Jackson Laboratory!

This conference will provide plenary talks, workshops and opportunities for discussion to explore ways to give students the opportunity to develop their own evidence-based understanding of science and mathematics concepts. Drawing from examples in mathematics, biology, physics, astronomy, earth sciences, and chemistry, the conference program will focus on:

• Using research in the classroom to identify what students know, and how they learn;
• Using that information to successfully implement guided-inquiry instruction for students;
• Building student motivation and broadening participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the STEM disciplines; and
• Moving toward the vision of A Framework for K-12 Science Education, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM).

Join your colleagues for an exciting two days focused on research-supported strategies to help Maine students learn science and mathematics well. The conference will open late Sunday afternoon with registration, dinner and a keynote address by Michael Wittmann, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Maine, and will end at 3:00 P.M. on the afternoon of June 30th. Stipends of $400 and CEUs are available to eligible teachers who participate in the entire conference. Stipend recipients who live more than 50 miles away are also eligible for on-campus housing during the conference at no cost. The conference is free for Maine pre-service and in-service middle or high school science and mathematics teachers, University of Maine System faculty involved in STEM teacher preparation, University of Maine researchers studying teaching and learning in the middle and high school levels, and all invited presenters. A Certificate of Attendance will be provided to those who attend all conference events, and participants may apply for Continuing Education Units. All participants are invited to present posters showing research-supported curricula or pedagogy, assessment tools, guided-inquiry experiences and other related topics.
