Visiting Ethiopian Scholar Adane Tadesse Working on Migration and Climate Change
The Political Science department, in collaboration with SPIA, is hosting Adane Tadesse as the UMaine Visiting Libra Diversity Scholar for spring and summer terms. Tadesse is from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, where he has lectured in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, and the Center for Forced Displacement and Migration Studies since 2016. He was also the lead researcher for a project on climate migration in East Africa with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and the Institute of Peace and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Security Studies (IPSS). Previously, Tadesse was the project coordinator for the Center for Advancement of Rights and Democracy in Ethiopia, helping to coordinate work on peacebuilding in Ethiopia, and research associate with Open Society Foundation examining the role of Ethiopian higher education sector in peace. Tadesse was also a visiting researcher the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Washington, D.C.) conducting research and writing on the conflict in Ethiopia and advocating with US policymakers.
Tadesse has had a busy spring at UMaine. He guest-lectured in three courses including Politics of Africa, Migration & Displacement, and Refugees in Global Politics. In addition, the POS department hosted a welcome event – “Coffee & Cookies” for an informal conversation with Tadesse and our students. Tadesse also presented his research at the UMaine Climate Change Institute on “Beyond Crisis: Climate Mobility Dynamics in the Central Sahel, Eastern Africa and the Horn of Africa.”
Tadesse will also be developing several research projects and collaborations with Professor Micinski on climate change and migration in Africa. In addition, Tadesse will present more of his research at several open community events this summer in Orono and Bangor.
