Participate in a UMaine Study on Narcan

,

My name is Sam Slavin, and I am a senior undergraduate student at the University of Maine who is double majoring in psychology and social work and minoring in political science.

Under the guidance of Professor Robert Glover, who is in the Political Science Department, this research study aims to better understand Narcan/naloxone care. This research is also being mentored by Professor Katherine Darling, who is in the School of Nursing. We are specifically looking at patterns of owning and carrying Narcan/naloxone. Gaining this understanding will allow us to, in collaboration with advocates in the substance use community, better inform Narcan/naloxone training, harm reduction drug policy, and funding for harm reduction services in the state of Maine. I am contacting you to ask if you would like to participate in our survey. You must be at least 18 years old, live in Maine, have used opioids not prescribed to you by a doctor in the past, and be able to take the survey online through Qualtrics. Please note that participation in this research is voluntary.

This research survey is anonymous and is online. This survey will take approximately 15 minutes and will include questions about sociodemographic characteristics (recovery/active-use status, age, race, etc), whether someone carries Narcan/naloxone, knowledge of Good Samaritan laws, attitudes toward police, knowledge of how to administer Narcan/naloxone, and comfort in delivering Narcan/naloxone. Please take the survey only once.

By submitting this survey, you will be able to enter a raffle in which you may be randomly chosen to win one award from the following: four $75 Hannaford e-gift cards.

At the end of the survey, you can also choose to sign up for an optional 45-minute follow-up interview. The first 20 volunteers will be invited to participate in an interview. By reaching the end of the interview, you will be additionally offered a $30 Hannaford e-gift card.

After Tuesday, September 30th at 11:59 pm, people will not be able to take the survey, and interviews will no longer be conducted.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Sam Slavin at sam.slavin@maine.edu or Robert Glover, Associate Professor of Political Science and Honors and the faculty sponsor, at robert.glover@maine.edu or 207-581-1880.
