Black Bear Safe app introductory video - transcript

Amber Hagin: Here at the University of Maine we want everyone to have a safe and rewarding experience. The University has a number of resources in place to create a safe atmosphere.

The University has its own fully certified Police Department staffed 24/7 365 days a year.

Curran Grant: The University Volunteer Ambulance Corps is staffed by student volunteers who are fully trained as EMT’s and are available 24/7 to provide emergency medical care.

Amber Hagin: Cutler Medical Center provides a multitude of medical services for the University Community and is affiliated with Northern Light Health.

Curran Grant: The University also offers counseling and psychiatric services for students and staff.

Amber Hagin: The University is now introducing a mobile application to make accessing these UMaine resources even easier!

The app provides easy access to dial 911 and phone numbers of local police departments. Has two walk home features, friend walk and virtual walk home. Users can report crime tips through a variety of methods. Users can access emergency plans covering a variety of situations. Support resources for Title-IX and mental health counseling. Additional safety services are also available.

Curran Grant: You may have noticed these blue light beacons dotted around campus, these are strategically placed so that no matter where you are outside on campus, you are able to see one.

The new Black Bear Safe application can serve as a mobile blue light. Just like the call boxes, this feature sends your real-time location along with the call to UMaine PD dispatchers, so you can have emergency services no matter where you are on campus.

If you find yourself walking alone, but want some extra peace of mind, the Black Bear Safe application can help. It offers two ways for others to monitor your walk on a map. The first is Friend Walk.

The Friend Walk feature allows you to send a link to a friend or family member. This link allows them to see your location and where you are walking to. They will be able to view your progress and check in with you or contact emergency services if needed.

Amber Hagin: If you prefer, the Virtual Walkhome tile can be used to send your location directly to a UMaine PD dispatcher instead. If you need to speak to dispatchers during your walk, you can press the red emergency call button. UMaine PD can then dispatch an Officer or Medical Services to your location. A dispatcher may also call you if they see anything unusual about your route.

Curran Grant: We hope you enjoyed this overview of the Black Bear Safe application. It’s available to download on the Apple App Store and Google play, for free. If you have any questions, please call UMaine PD at 581-4040. We really hope you have a safe and enjoyable year!

Both: Go Black Bears!
