Philosophers worldwide coming to UMaine for conference Sept. 25-27

The University of Maine is bringing philosophy experts from around the world to campus during the 49th annual conference of the International Merleau-Ponty Circle Sept. 25-27. This year’s theme is “Health and Healing: Personal, Social and Environmental.” 

Maurice Merleau-Ponty was a French 20th century existential philosopher. He’s noted for developing critical ideas about health and medicine, ecology, personhood, art, multiculturalism and much more. The international organization named after him consists of students, scholars and professors with a curiosity for Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy. 

The conference is open to all who are interested. There will be international scholars speaking on campus, as well as keynote speakers Havi Carel from the University of Bristol and Drew Leder from Loyola University Maryland. There will also be various artistic performances.
