National PEO Scholar Award opportunity available for UMaine doctoral students

The Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) in central Maine, a local nonprofit, is seeking a doctoral scholar from the University of Maine in the final two years of their program to serve as a nominee for the National PEO Scholar Award

The National PEO Scholar Awards were established in 1991 to provide a substantial one-time, merit-based award for women in the United States and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral-level degree at an accredited college or university. The maximum award amount is $25,000.

The eligibility and application process is available for review for more information. Applicants are required to have a doctoral graduation date between April 2027 and August 2028 to be eligible for an initial interview and to submit an application.

UMaine lecturer of special education Krystle Merry, a former PEO doctoral scholar, will schedule initial virtual interviews Aug. 18-29 with any candidates who are interested and meet the eligibility requirements. Only one of the candidates interviewed will be selected by the local chapter organization for nomination. A nomination from a local chapter is required to submit an application.

To be considered for this opportunity, interested doctoral students should complete a PEO Scholar Interview Request Form, including all required attachments, by Sunday, Aug. 17. The full interview and selection process will go through November. Late interview form submissions will be reviewed if another candidate withdraws from the interview or application process.
