Penobscot Theatre Company’s Berry directing ‘Wyoming’ production at UMaine

The University of Maine School of Performing Arts Division of Theatre and Dance has recruited Jonathan Berry, artistic director of the Bangor-based Penobscot Theatre Company (PTC), to helm an upcoming production of the family drama “Wyoming.”

The play, written by Brian Watkins, is scheduled to run from Feb. 27-March 2, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 and 28 and March 1, and at 1 p.m. on March 1 and 2. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online. Admission is free for students with a MaineCard.

“It has all of the things I love — rich, complicated characters, taut familial dynamics, some mystery — and that you really need a terrific ensemble to play together and listen and be in a relationship. Plus, I think, it just offers actors some great opportunities to let loose and some great drama,” said Berry. “It’s been a real joy working with the students and seeing them dig into the material in such a significant way.”

Since joining PTC in 2022, Berry, a director, producer and teacher from Chicago, has directed many shows and helped shepherd even more through their production process. Previous to his time at PTC, he spent nearly 20 years working with Chicago’s famed Steppenwolf Theatre.

Directing “Wyoming” is not Berry’s first foray in instructing college thespians. He previously taught performance and directing classes at Northwestern University, Columbia College, the University of Chicago, University of Michigan and University of Illinois Chicago. Now, Berry is bringing his own unique vision and deep-seated professionalism to the Hauck Auditorium stage.

“I think some version of education should be present in all regional theaters and, in the best scenarios, you have a range of opportunities from toddler all the way up through college students,” Berry said. “And for the University, their students are receiving professional training and opportunities that will prove invaluable experience for anyone who wishes to pursue this work beyond college.   It really does create an ideal symbiotic relationship that provides needed resources and benefits to both organizations.”
