Lichtenwalner speaks to BDN about prescription requirement for livestock antibiotics

Anne Lichtenwalner, University of Maine Cooperative Extension associate professor and director of the veterinary diagnostic laboratory, spoke with the Bangor Daily News about new guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that will require farmers to receive a prescription to obtain medically important antibiotics starting in 2023. Lichtenwalner says the requirement was prompted by an effort to slow and control the increase of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and bacteria. “Science does not know all the ways we end up with these resistant pathogens and bacteria,” she said.
