Seacoastonline shares UMaine Extension ant mound information

Seacoastonline shared information from University of Maine Cooperative Extension about Allegheny ant mounds. According to UMaine Extension, as cited in the article, “Mounds are noticeable throughout a variety of habitats, especially in areas lacking tall vegetation that may shade the colony from sunlight. Workers remove all vegetation from the top of the mound and surrounding area by formic acid injection. The mound serves as a solarium, collecting heat from direct sunlight to warm the colony.”
