BDN interviews Dill about protection against ticks

The Bangor Daily News interviewed Griffin Dill, an integrated pest management professional who manages the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab, about how Mainers can protect themselves from disease-carrying ticks. Dill said using Permethrin and repellents that include DEET and picaridin help protect against ticks. “Essential oil products are really popular for being natural products, but unfortunately, those products, the research that has been done — which is fairly minimal at this point — indicates if it works at all, it’s for really short periods of time,” he said. Several companies have conducted trials for Lyme disease vaccines. “Whether any of them make it to the market in the near term is anyone’s guess, unfortunately,” Dill said.
