Birthisel talks to NYT about solarization weed control approach
The New York Times interviewed Sonja Birthisel, a postdoctoral research associate with the University of Maine School of Forest Resources, for the article “The Easier Way to Make a Garden Bed.” Birthisel talks about the chemical-free weed-control strategy of solarization. “Soil solarization is the practice of covering moistened soil with clear plastic for a period of weeks, to create a local greenhouse effect,” she said. “If you wanted to take a piece of lawn and turn that into a garden, solarization would be a great first step.”
