Hopkins to talk about maple syrup on Maine Calling

Kathryn Hopkins, an educator with University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Somerset County, will be a guest on Maine Calling 1-2 p.m. Friday, March 13 to discuss “How Maine’s Maple Syrup Industry Came to Be & What It Means For our Economy.”

Hopkins is a statewide resource for the Maine maple syrup industry, and is one of the creators of the International Maple Syrup Institute Maple Grading School that’s been presented annually since 2004.

In advance of Maine Maple Sunday on March 22, Hopkins and other guests will discuss the history and culture of this iconic Maine product, as well as challenges and opportunities for the industry. Native Americans in the Northeast developed the method of collecting sap from maple trees and turning it into a sweetening product. Maine is among the top three maple syrup producers in the nation. Guests also will talk about some purported health benefits of maple syrup, and share recipes.
