ORONO, Maine ‘ University of Maine ice sheet research got a boost this
week with the announcement of a new multi-institution science and
technology center at the University of Kansas. Two UMaine faculty members
‘ Terry Hughes of the Dept. of Earth Sciences and James Fastook of the
Dept. of Computer Science ‘ will receive support for their efforts to
improve computer modeling of ice sheet behavior. Both are also affiliated
with UMaine’s Climate Change Institute.

Funded by a five-year $19 million grant from
the National Science Foundation, the new center will be known as the
Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets, or CReSIS. ‘Researchers . . .
will develop models and technology to achieve a better understanding of
the mass balance of polar ice sheets and its impact on the rising sea
level glaciologists have observed in recent years,?
