Food Rescue Maine logoMACHIAS, Maine — Help reduce food waste by enjoying a free meal and good company during the Machias Area Community Suppers held at 5 p.m. on Thursdays at the Center Street Community Room, 9 Center St. The next weekly supper will be on May 16.

Hosted by the University of Maine Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions, the Machias Area Food Pantry and Healthy Acadia, the buffet-style meal will feature creative menu items based on weekly surplus food donated by farms, food processors, retailers, pantries, schools, restaurants and other organizations.

Guests are also invited to come early at 4:30 p.m. for coffee, tea and an additional opportunity to visit with friends and neighbors.

Community volunteers are vital to these events by cooking, serving and cleaning. To volunteer, arrange food donations or seek additional information, contact Vanessa Young or Liz Sullivan at machiasfoodconnections@gmail.com.

The Machias Community Supper is part of the new Machias Food Connections program. The program seeks to connect all local food system participants to prevent food waste and deliver sustainable economic, social and climate benefits for the Machias community. It also features Machias Food Rescue, another initiative for collecting and distributing all Machias area surplus food.
