Lee, Blackmer and Fernandez discuss food waste on Maine Calling
Of the food produced in the United State, 40 percent is wasted. Not only could this wasted food help feed those who need it, food waste also contributes to climate change. To mark Earth Day, Maine Public presented a Maine Calling show, “The harms of food waste, its links to climate change, and how Maine is taking action.” The show focused on what Maine people and organizations are doing to end food waste through community action and innovative solutions.
Representing the University of Maine’s food waste solutions team on the show were Susanne Lee, a faculty fellow at the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions, Travis Blackmer, lecturer and undergraduate coordinator with the School of Economics, and Ivan Fernandez, Distinguished Maine Professor at the Climate Change Institute and School of Forest Resources. A recording of the show is available online.
