Research on social and economic resilience in Maine’s lobster fishery highlighted in online event

“Developing Social Indicators of Resilience in Maine’s Lobster Fishery” was the subject of a February 25 Lunch and Learn online event hosted by the Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries (MCCF).

Although the biology, ecology and population dynamics of Maine lobster are extensively researched, not much is known about the social side of the lobster fishery—the people who work within it and the communities that depend on it.

Members of a research team including Josh Stoll, assistant professor of marine policy at UMaine and Mitchell Center faculty fellow; UMaine postdoctoral research associate Theresa Burnham; MCCF’s chief scientist, Dr. Carla Guenther; Kathleen Reardon, senior lobster biologist with the Maine Department of Marine Resources; and Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, were part of a panel at the event.

This research was featured in a 2021 story on the Mitchell Center website. Learn more about the Lunch and Learn event in an article by Penobscot Bay Press. View a recording of the event at the MCCF website (click on February 2022).
