Michelle de Leon column on Indigenous storytelling featured in Bangor Daily News
The Bangor Daily News recently published a column co-written by Michelle de Leon, a graduate student in ecology and environmental sciences at UMaine, and Noela Altvater, an intern with Wabanaki Youth in Science (WaYS). De Leon and Altvater argue that listening to and sharing the stories of Indigenous peoples in Maine can influence change in tribal and nontribal communities.
De Leon and Altvater have worked as part of a team to produce a StoryMap to communicate complex issues faced by the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Sipayik, including around water quality.
This work was discussed by de Leon as part of a Mitchell Center Sustainability Talk in November 2021.
