Materials Science & Engineering

The common supply-chain bottleneck in all emerging technologies are new materials for devices such as sensors, catalysts, electronics, batteries, cyber-physical interfaces, health and climate/environment monitoring. Recent Federal and State initiatives to boost US self-reliance in these technologies are driving new investment and job growth in every state across the nation, including Maine. An essential requirement for growth in these areas is a workforce with basic training in the science and engineering of materials that enable the new devices of today.

This certificate program, the first of its kind in the State of Maine, is designed to provide the workforce training needs for all these growth areas. It is open to all students with an earned baccalaureate degree in a STEM field from an accredited program, and will provide them with the necessary concepts and working knowledge related to the materials behind their technologies.

The certificate requires completion of four courses: two core courses and two electives chosen from a large selection of courses that can be categorized into three groups:

  • Devices and Smart Technologies
  • Infrastructure and Manufacturing
  • Sustainability, Environment, and Health

Degrees offered: Graduate Certificate
