Events and Hospitality Conference Assistant Job Description (Summer 2025)

I. Role of the CA: The role of the Summer CA is to support and guide residents while building living communities. Fundamental roles of the CA include (but are not limited to) Events & Hospitality Team Member, Role Model, Student Development Facilitator, Record Keeper and Administrator, and Referral Agent/Reporter.


Events & Hospitality Team Member: As part of the Events & Hospitality, CAs attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and other informational activities. Establishing positive relationships with students, summer program directors, and REU leaders is the foundation for community development. CAs need to be visible, available, and approachable whenever possible to be most effective.


Role Model: CAs have a visible role on campus and are expected to maintain a positive attitude and to support one another and other staff members on campus.


Student Development Facilitator:
CAs serve as active facilitators in promoting greater self-awareness and self-confidence among residence hall students. CAs look for and provide opportunities for students to be active in their residential communities.


Administrator: CAs complete administrative tasks, including weekly group evaluations, maintenance requests, incident reports, etc. Summer CAs participate in a weekly duty rotation, attend staff meetings and in-service training, and open and close the residence halls.

II. Immediate Supervisor: Summer Resident Assistants report to the Director of Events & Hospitality or her or his designee. Additional duties, tasks, or responsibilities may be assigned by the Director/Assistant Director as needed.

III. General Description:
Additional Time Commitments: Summer CAs may hold secondary employment, including internships, on or off campus with prior permission from the Director or her or his designee. Conference Assistant responsibilities are paramount and take precedence. Participation in 20 or more hours/week must be approved by the CA’s immediate supervisor before committing to the position.


Role Modeling and Personal Conduct: CAs are students of exemplary character and deportment. They are positive role models and representatives of Events & Hospitality and the University of Maine. They are expected to avoid situations on duty that would have them referred to the Office of Community Standards, Rights, and Responsibilities. Conduct – on or off campus – unbecoming a CA is a serious violation of the trust placed in CAs by the department, division, and university.


Collaboration: CAs cooperate and support other UMaine departments and outside agencies. Information known to a CA is reported appropriately and timely to maximize the opportunity for the most positive outcome.


Sexual Harassment: The University of Maine, Events & Hospitality, and Residence Life abide by the UMS Sexual Harassment policy. Evaluation & Feedback: Summer CAs are evaluated in August, but job performance feedback is provided throughout the summer. Feedback may be verbal and/or written. When a CA’s job performance requires it, a CA may be placed on probation or other status, including suspension or dismissal. Performance as a Summer CA may impact the ability to continue as a CA during the Academic Year.

Additional Duties as Assigned: CAs should expect to be asked to complete other duties that contribute to the operation of the residence halls, Events & Hospitality, and/or the University of Maine. Among others, responsibilities unique to the Summer CA position include:

  • Preparation for and staffing during the Summer Orientation program.
  • 8 hours per week of office support in the Events & Hospitality
  • Manage summer program check-in to the Resident Halls.


Holiday and Break Closings: During the Summer, the Residence Halls do not close and remain staffed following the regular CA duty schedule.

V. Remuneration:
The CA position may range from 20-40 hours per week at $14.90 per hour.
RA work hours are 5:00 pm to 10 pm and on-call from 10 pm to 7 am.
Room and board as well as laundry fees will be waived for the CA.
The CA will be provided meal funds equivalent to five working days per week (12 work weeks, 60 days total), with a daily allowance of $34 per day. These funds will be loaded onto the CA’s Mainecard.

VI. Time Away:
Time away should be pre-approved by a supervisor. A CA should not be away longer than a week at a time and no longer than 2 weeks during the summer, barring emergencies/special circumstances.
