Job Description

Dr. Juan Romero and Dr. Glenda Pereira (https://umaine.edu/animal-pfas/) are seeking highly motivated applicants for a full-time, in-person MSc Assistantship. This position is ideal for recent BSc graduates with a background in animal biology and who like lab-based research. The successful candidate will engage in a cutting-edge project aimed at optimizing a per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) feed binder. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, designing and conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, collaborating with research partners, and contributing to publications and presentations. This assistantship offers a unique opportunity to work with PFAS experts, develop expertise in advanced analytical techniques, and contribute to meaningful environmental solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct laboratory work to optimize a PFAS feed binder using in vitro techniques.
  • Perform laboratory biological and chemical analyses.
  • Use statistical models to analyze data.
  • Present findings at academic conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Assist with undergraduate student mentorship and departmental outreach.

Requirements

  • BSc in a life science discipline.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful resident.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and planning skills.
  • Valid US driver’s license.
  • Being able to lift up to 50 lbs of lab equipment and samples when required.

Preferred Qualifications
Prior laboratory research experience.

Purpose

The MSc assistantship aims to conduct a research project aimed at optimizing a PFAS feed binder for livestock. The position is designed to advance the professional development of the assistant as a researcher and scholar.
